Throughout Blogmas I have tried not to talk about specific gift sets because I am pre-writing as much as I can and I have no idea whether these sets will still be available by the time these posts go live. I feel like today's gift set is quite a risk so I wanted to talk about it early on. There are some sets which seem too good to pass. These are the type of sets that make a good stocking filler or little gift for yourself so they sell out super quickly and in my eyes the Real Techniques Grab and Glow Brush Set is one of those sets.
I have to say if I was wandering around Superdrug this set would not have stood out to me, in fact I probably wouldn't have seen it as it is so small but I ended up hunting it down. Every year I make an effort to look at the Real Techniques sets as they always have some good sets which make an easy gift. Plus the brushes are actually really good quality for the price. Last year I bought one of their bigger brush sets (The Filtered Face Set) in the sale for £40 and it is something I use every day so I can definitely say you will get your monies worth with a Real Techniques set. One thing to note is that it is always worth checking both Boots and Superdrug as they normally create different sets for each store. I prefer the darker purple handle they have used for the bulk of the packaging for the Boots sets but I actually think the Superdrug sets are slightly stronger in terms of the brushes which are included. As I was looking at the Superdrug website that was when I saw the Grab and Glow set which I then decided to look for in store.
I wasn't going to order this set online as realistically I didn't need it for myself and I couldn't think of anyone who I could give this to as part of their present. Instead I figured I would just see if they had it in my local Superdrug and investigate it more. The major thing that actually put me off the set was the fact that it is £16 full price, which I wouldn't question as much if this were two full sizes brushes but these are two mini brushes. You can buy the Everyday Essentials Set for £19.99 and that contains 4 brushes and a sponge so I do have to say these brush sets for Christmas do seem a tad overpriced to me. As I did say, this contains 2 mini brushes and for some reason this just massively appealed to me. I know Real Techniques stock mini brushes all year around now but I believe it is only really the Buffing Brush or the Expert Face Brush, which is included in this set but I was really after the mini Contour Brush.
Having tried quite a lot of the Real Techniques brushes this set features two of my absolute faves: the Expert Face Brush and the Contour Brush. The actual brush heads are exactly the same as the full size, the only real difference is that the handle is way shorter on these mini brushes which makes them perfect for travelling. The Expert Face brush has been a favourite for a long time as it suits the sort of foundations I like. My favourite foundations are the Fenty Beauty foundation and Estee Lauder Double Wear which are both particularly liquid foundations. If I used something like the Real Techniques Buffing Brush which is a lot more freely moving and not quite as densely packed, it just absorbs a lot of the product and it doesn't move it around as much as I like. I find the Expert Face Brush due to it being more densely packed, gives me good coverage and it looks more even without soaking up all of the product. If you too like a more liquid foundation, the Expert Face Brush is the brush I recommend.
I've had an Expert Face Brush practically since I started blogging which is over 4 years ago now but the Contour Brush only made it's way into my collection last year when it was part of the Christmas set I bought. Ever since this brush made its way into my life, I have used the Contour Brush every day, surprisingly for Contouring. This is the perfect shape to really chisel out your cheeks and to create shape. Not only do I use it for contour but I also use it to clean up underneath my contour. I never go in hard with contour and I don't bake but sometimes my contour/bronzer can end up a little bit low so I will just take a little bit of powder on this brush and clean up. I have also used this for highlight but the brush is a little bit fatter than I typically like for highlight but at a push I will use it.
Real Techniques really go all out for their Christmas sets with limited edition brushes quite often making their way into the box sets but they also do up the packaging a little bit as well. Usually the brush handles are given a colour based on when the brushes should be used: so a golden handle is base, a pink handle is finishing and purple is for eyes. They are going through a rebrand so this will change but at the moment this is how things stand. However this doesn't even matter for the Christmas brushes as they completely change the handles and they all match. Last year the brushes has a sort of sunset ombre effect and this year it is a sort of disco neon theme. It has a holographic handle with a neon base. The holographic wrap is silver on Superdrug sets and a deep black/purple for Boots but both of them have neon bases. I prefer the deep colour that Boot have, I'm not fully sold on the silver but I guess really the packaging doesn't matter as these are going to sit in my handbag.
I do not think these brushes will find their way into my every day brushes but these will be perfect to keep in my hand bag for any necessary touch ups and also they will be literally perfect for if I ever go away. I've bought this set for myself but for all of these reasons it also makes a great gift. I feel like everyone must use something to apply their makeup, these wouldn't be in the way in anyone's collection and at £8 it makes a great addition to any present.
At £16 I'm not sold on the set. I think £16 is a lot of money when you consider you can buy the Everyday Essential set for £19.99. I do question whether they inflate the prices knowing that stores discount them a lot anyway. Either way, Real Techniques does make a lovely present and an easy present. Personally I would love to receive something from the brand so if you are still looking for a gift this Christmas Real Techniques is a good brand to check out.
