Read "Gone Girl" Now

It's 4:30 in the morning and I just finished reading Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl," a book so good I had to open my laptop, get online and tell anyone (this side of facebook) who'll listen that YOU MUST READ IT NOW! It's about a wife who goes missing and her husband's suspicious reaction to it, plus a gargantuan onion's worth of page-turning layers that roll out a chilling subtext. You girls are going to forget Christian Grey and Anastasia "Holy Crap!" Steele ever even fluttered through your mind once Nick & Amy - Nick & Amy - get their claws in.

I started "Gone Girl" a week-and-a-half ago at Shi Shi -- it is now many days overdue but the library will forgive me. I became possessed by its entertainment value while with Michael, Morgan and her mama at their Crescent Lake cabin -- this thing is the best beach read of all time, just you wait -- and even brought it along in vain to Bethany's wedding in Yachats, where it sat in my backpack unread but there, still there until I picked it up again at vacation's end, back to the real world after a wonderful week away...

Except for this fucking great book!! It will forever be associated with one of the best summers of my life. The build-up and payoff on this thing are what summer reading is all about, and the brilliant knots Flynn has tied into her terrific entertainment will tangle in your head til the brink of dawn. Probably several nights in a row unless you binge it down in a single sitting of sun-shocked reading heaven (Liz will do the latter, mark my words).

Get on the library list or go to Powell's. Gillian Flynn deserves our money, and Hollywood's. Everyone is going to tell you to read this, and probably they already have, so.

OMG, it is so bedtime. Blame the book, Michael!
